The Tiger Rising

The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo

Walking through the misty Florida woods one morning, twelve-year-old Rob Horton is stunned to find a tiger — a real-life, very large tiger —pacing back and forth in a cage. What’s more, on the same extraordinary day, he meets Sistine Bailey, a girl who shows her feelings as readily as Rob hides his. As they learn to trust each other and, ultimately, to be friends, Rob and Sistine prove that some things — like memories, and heartache, and tigers — can’t be locked up forever.

The Good

Sistine stands up for Rob and helps him fight bullies.

The Bad

Rob’s mom died. Sistine’s dad had an affair with his secretary. The characters curse and take God’s name in vain. Rob gets bullied at school. Rob and his dad live in a dirty motel. The motel owner forces Rob to feed his tiger.

Ages

10+ is a good age for this book.

My Take

I didn’t like this book. It portrayed that there is no hope and that bullies,  dead moms and broken relationships are just part of life. The ending does not end the book very well at all. I would not recommend it.
