The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland
In the small town of Xanadu, Wyoming lies the Menagerie, a top secret facility filled with unicorns, dragons, phoenixes, and other fairy tale creatures. At least, it was a secret–until six griffin cubs escaped.
If Logan, Zoe, and Blue don’t get the cubs back fast, the entire Menagerie will be shut down. The race is on and the resulting adventure is only the beginning of a thrilling series that will leave readers wanting a magical menagerie of their very own.
The Good
Logan decides to help Zoe find her lost “dog”, and later track down the griffins.
The Bad
Logan’s mom left him and his dad. Blue is half-person, half-mermaid. There are several mythical animals throughout the book, check the back of each book for the list. Logan lies to his Dad about the Menagerie. Zoe had to give her best friend kraken ink (it takes away memories of supernatural encounters) in order to protect the menagerie.
Ages
Ages 9+ would be great for this book. It might also make a good read-aloud.
My Take
I enjoyed The Menagerie. Tui Sutherland, if you don’t know, is also the author of the Wings of Fire series. Spoiler alert: the book ends on the most awful cliff-hanger, so have the second one ready and waiting! For anyone who enjoyed fantasy mixed with mystery, this book is for you!
