The Monster in the Hollows

The Monster in the Hollows by Andrew Peterson

Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby, the Lost Jewels of Anniera, are hiding from Gnag the Nameless in the Green Hollows, one of the few places in the land of Aerwiar not overrun by the Fangs of Dang. But there’s a big problem. Janner’s little brother–heir to the throne of Anniera–has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows, he looks like a monster.

But Janner knows better. His brother isn’t as scary as he looks. He’s perfectly harmless. Isn’t he?

Full of characters rich in heart, smarts, and courage, The Monster in the Hollows is a tale children of all ages will cherish, families can read aloud, and readers’ groups are sure to enjoy discussing for its many layers of meaning.

The Good

Janner protects his brother at all costs. Esben, Podo, and Nia risk their lives for the children.

The Bad

Kalmar steals and kills livestock. The Hollowsfolk try to kill him for supposed murder of Freva’s daughter. The Overseer makes children slave away at the Fork Factory.  There are several weird creatures, including cloven (people turned into mixes of animals, not evil), fangs (similar to cloven, but all one animal, very evil), and snickbuzzards (birds with bellybuttons). Rudric accidentally kills Esben. The Esben dies after his family discover that he became a cloven.

Ages

Ages 10+ is great for this book. It would also be a good read-aloud.

My Take

I love this series! The Monster in the Hollows is a book you will definitely not want to miss. Andrew Peterson is a masterful Christian storyteller, spinning tales full of meaning and humor, joy and sorrow. Now I don’t really enjoy the new covers, I personally feel they give away a bit too much of the story, but the books are still AMAZING! I would definitely recommend this book.
