By the Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman
Young Jack sets out from Boston with his stuffy but trusty butler, Praiseworthy, stowing away on a large ship bound for California. Leaving an aunt and two sisters behind, Jack is on a mission to save the family home by striking it rich in the Gold Rush! Along the way they encounter a colorful cast of sailors, miners, outlaws, and varmints. Will Jack and Praiseworthy hit pay dirt?
The Good
Even though Praiseworthy is a butler, he looks after Jack like his father.
The Bad
A cutpurse steals Praiseworthy and Jack’s money, then later steals their friend’s map to pay dirt. They get robbed by outlaws. Praiseworthy boxes a giant man name the Mountain Ox.
Ages
Ages 8+ should read this book. It’s also a good read-aloud.
My Take
I really like By the Great Horn Spoon! It’s a great tale about the gold rush and helps you understand how the gold rush really worked. I would definitely recommend this book to any age.
