Melissa is a nobody. Wilf is a slacker. Bondi is a show-off. At least that’s what their middle school teachers think. To everyone’s surprise, they are the three students chosen to compete for a ten-thousand-dollar scholarship, solving clues that lead them to various locations around Chicago. It’s only by secretly joining forces and using their unique talents that the trio is able to uncover the truth behind the Ambrose Deception- a truth that involves a lot more than just a scholarship.
The Good
Three kids race across Chicago in a competition to win a ten-thousand-dollar scholarship. With their trusty drivers helping them along, the three kids solve the clues. But something is up, and in the end the trio works together to uncover the real mystery. Real clues you can solve yourself are combined with mystery. Emily Ecton writes a story full of suspense and problem-solving. An incredible read.
The Bad
This book is not violent or filled with witch-craft. Melissa lives with her grandmother and brother. Wilf eats a ton of hotdogs. Bondi’s mom puts her family on the Paleo diet. A great story for even the most conservative families.
Ages
This book is a good read-aloud. Ages 8+ is perfect for this book.
My Take
The Ambrose deception, is a great book. The author did a great job weaving a story that has action and suspense, but is still readable for more conservative people. Clues fit in with the actual city of Chicago very nicely. You can easily identify with the characters and, if you live in Chicago, the setting. It’s almost historical fiction, but not quite. Emily Ecton is a great author, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books.
